I’m setting myself up to use the wonderful gift certificates I got to Jimmy Beans Wool and Fire Mountain Gems. Why those two, in particular? Because I’m going to knit me a Shipwreck, and it calls for 1,311 yards of wool, and 5,000 beads.
Here’s where your opinion comes in.
What do you think of this pattern:
knit up in this yarn:
The yarn is called “Open Seas,” which I think bodes well for the whole “ocean wreckage” motif. I’m heavily leaning towards this, but would love opinions. 🙂
(If this is a go, then I have to pick the beads. Oy.)
Or maybe this yarn?

Dang. I’m leaning towards the greenish. What are the dimensions of the shawl? 1311 yards!
I’m leaning toward the Lorna’s Laces yarn… I haven’t seen many pictures of Shipwrecked worked up in variegated yarns that I actually thought looked right… If you go variegated, I’d keep it tonal – two blues, two greens, etc. You might want to invest in a bead spinner for stringing your beads, or I have one you can borrow. (I already have my yarn and beads for my Shipwreck – just haven’t started it yet. 🙂 )
I can’t opine. But I love it. And how long will it take you?!
Alyson: It’s 57″ in diameter, once it’s all done. 🙂
Annalivia: If I knit on it as my primary project, probably about a month.
I like the Lorna’s Laces as well, but probably because I prefer blue to green. I’d check out some iris beads (metallic blue/purple/green finish). I can’t wait to see pics, it is quite intricate!
Oooh, I’m conflicted again. I was all set to order the Lorna’s Laces (Alyson, I was intrigued by the green, too, but Beth’s comment about the variegated made sense to me), when I ran across this yarn. I’ve knit with it before, and the texture of the silk and seacell is amazing, and it has incredible drape. Plus, from the sea! Kinda perfect, no?
Thoughts?

Nice color! I’ve never worked with that particular yarn before, but I like the idea of the seacell.
As soon as I can figure out a SNAFU with my JBW gift certificate, I think I’m going to go with the Hand Maiden. I’ll probably be back for bead recommendations, though Deidre’s suggestions are right on the money, I think. 🙂
Thanks, all!
I like the idea of the iris beads, too.
