Ask LazyWeb: Calling All Knitters…

I need input (cue Johnny 5 impression).

I have about 1,000 yards of fingering weight yarn that knits up best on US3 needles. Point me to your favorite shawl or scarf pattern that will help me use up this wonderful yarn.

PSA: What’s up, Apple?

For those of you who didn’t know it existed (like me, until a day or two ago), Apple provides a status dashboard. It covers Services, Stores, and iCloud, broken out with a reasonable amount of detail.

This might help with those, “Is it just me, or is $FOO really just broken right now?” moments. (You have those, too, right? It’s not just me? Is there a dashboard for that? Oh dear.)

A question for the ages…

I’m going on a short trip soon. (For those who might be interested, I’m heading to Massachusetts for a week. Let me know if you want to meet up!) I will be driving (riding, really) up, staying a week, and flying back (checking a bag, because I am incapable of traveling light).

The question is: how many knitting projects do I need to take with me?

Ask LazyWeb: Best (iOS) food-tracking app?

Hello, again! This time, I’m here looking for input on a food-tracking app for an iOS device (must run on iPhone, an iPad app would be nifty, but not required).

Have you used any of these? What did you love (or hate) about it? Save me the trials and tribulations you’ve experienced!

(And, to be clear, I’m looking for an app to log what I eat and drink. I do not need a LoJack™ for my groceries.)

Ask LazyWeb: Best jQuery reference?

Dear the smart people,

I’m getting ready to write a tool in a language or two that I’ve never used, and have been told that learning jQuery would be in my best interest. I’m looking for references / tutorials that even a meri can understand. What say you?

Not to wish anything bad upon my friends in New England…

… but, now that G and I have canceled our travel plans, and in turn caused other plans to be canceled, I damned well hope this doesn’t turn out to be a non-event, snow-wise. I was really looking forward to this trip!

PSA: Stupid weather. (Definite change in plans.)

In case anyone’s missed the memo, it looks like the French Toast Alert System is in full swing from New York State on upwards, starting tomorrow. You know, the day we were planning on driving through New York on upwards.

So yeah, not so much. G and I are opting to not take the risk, and are staying here in the DC area, where we’re supposed to get annoying wintery mix. This really sucks, because we had a lot of fun stuff planned for the trip, and there has been a great deal of back and forth on how we could possibly make it work. In the end, though, we’re opting for “better safe than sorry.”

PSA: Stupid weather. (Possibly modifying trip plans.)

G and I are all set to drive up to scenic Worcester, MA, on Friday. However, it seems there’s a chance of a Nor’easter coming, just to screw with our plans. (Yes, it’s our fault. Sorry.)

So, the possibilities are:

  • The weather people change their minds, and all will be well on Friday, and plans proceed unchanged.
  • Drive at least part way up Thursday night, and (if necessary) continue the drive Friday morning.
  • Scrub the mission entirely.

A lot of it depends on what the weather decides to do. Some of it depends on how G is feeling after working all day Thursday. (Between the knee and the fatigue, I am useless for long-haul driving.) As much as we’d hate to have to bail, we’d hate that a little bit less than being part of an n-car pileup on 95 somewhere.

We’ll keep you posted.

Ask LazyWeb: PayPal account types.

Anyone out there have a business PayPal account? If so, is there any easy way to see that? For instance, when I log in, under the “Welcome…,” it tells me I have a Premiere account. Is there anything like that with a Business account? If not, is there some other way to identify your account type?

(I’ve searched the PayPal web site, and Googled, but haven’t had much luck.)

(Also, don’t get me started on the ‘angry at PayPal’ front. I’ve been on hold for half an hour so far, and can recite their outgoing blurb, but haven’t heard an actual human yet.)

A class to dye for.

Yay! The day has finally come! In about half an hour, I’ll be heading off to a yarn dyeing class in Baltimore. As excited as I am, I do have concerns.
